What is Anonymouse?

Anonymouse is a location-based microblogging app that lets you share short posts with people in your community. You can post anonymously so you are free to speak your mind.

What can I use this app for?

Be creative and engage with your community. See what others are talking about. Speak your opinion on a current event. Share an event happening nearby. Tell a joke. Be open and make your voice heard.

You said the app doesn’t require WiFi or cellular data, but how does it work?

The app uses direct phone-to-phone WiFi communication. The range is limited to nearby phones; but those phones will collaborate to forward your messages across town. The goal is to connect you with your community, and we do it with a collaborating community of phones!

How is this different from other microblogging apps such as Yik Yak and Twitter?

Anonymouse is truly anonymous. You do not need to sign-up or reveal your true identity. The app works even if you choose to never reveal your location. You can control how far a message should travel: short for something spontaneous that only nearby people would care about, far for a community-wide conversation.

Is there a certain radius within which I will see people’s posts?

That depends on how many other people in town have installed the app. Our tests with a prototype indicate that it works for Ann Arbor if only 100 people at the University of Michigan campus install it.

How much does this app cost?

It's free!

Who developed this app and why?

Anonymouse was built by students and faculty at the University of Michigan who believe that friends and family members should be free to communicate electronically without being subject to blocking, censorship, and surveillance. We wanted a place where everyone can comfortably share their thoughts.
